Key Stat from Skype’s Living Workplace Survey

One of the take-a-ways from the Skype living workplace survey was the point about the communications tool that is expected to have the biggest gain in usage next year will be video calling.

This is not a stat to be taken lightly. And it's not all about Skype. Apple's FaceTime, Logitech's SightSpeed (a former client), client CounterPath's Bria and even Fring all join Skype in the battle to see you see others. Fring's news this week about mobile multiparty video chat adds to the melange of companies and services that will all fight for your eyes and ears.

And, gone are the days of the fear of a video call. Nowdays with webcams on everything from laptops to tablets to mobile phones, and with broadband and mobile networks robust enough to support real-time calling more and more of it will simply happen. It will happen because video really is the new voice, and as more and more workers work from home and as the road warriors need to "see" what's happening, the best way to avoid a flight or to have to fight traffic will simply be to fire up the webcam and simply start talking face to face.
