At the Wall Street Journal’s D Conference yesterday, Verizon announced their plans to enter the competitive VoIP market. Why not? In making the announcement the chairman said they have a national presence, why not sell it.
As the first RBOC to roll out VoIP nationally, Verizon goes head to head with AT&T and Vonage. It also ties in with their recent decision to increase the upload path for to 384 for DSL users. The extra headroom and bandwidth will only enhance the calling experience.
Seperately, Bell South said they will be conducting trails of network hosted VoIP with their business customers.
According to the announcement customers’ voice and data traffic will be carried on the private BellSouth(R) Regional IP Backbone, versus the public Internet, providing the enhanced security, reliability and quality of service that businesses demand. Bell South said there network was built by BellSouth to support next generation IP applications like VoIP and Network VPN.
