With many editors off for the weekend, a story by AP business reporter Ellen Simon ran late yesterday out of New York about VoIP.
Simon did a great job. Her quote was accurate, and she got the facts right. Any guesses where they came from. (wink..wink)
Seriously, having seen many reporters get the story wrong, or rely to often on press releases, Simon was able to grab on to the real meat of the story and the challenges facing consumers, especially the ones they don’t know about, which is what I pointed out to her about carriers, peering relationships and how the voice traffic travels around the Internet. The AP also took a photo so hopefully that moves too.
Update: The story and photo are getting pick up. Here’s one with the photo.
Simon repeats one misconception: VoIP “opens up new features, like Web-based management of voice mail.” I don’t agree with this statement in general and every one must agree that VoIp is not needed for web-management of voice mail. Such a voice mail server do accept messages from all phones, including POTS and retrival is not dependent on the technology used for voice calls.
