VoIP News Coverage Gets Mainstream

A local Kentucky newspaper columnist picked up on the VoIP story. While it would easy to pick on her calling SIPphone a new service and omitting companies like SKYPE. Firefly, yPhone, VoicePulse, VoiceGlo, Viper and AT&T’s CallVantage to name a few who all launched after SIPphone, I won’t go that far.

The reason is the story hit three very useful points in summarizing why consumers should find VoIP attractive:

a. Number portability–you can be in Danville, KY and have a Nashville, TN telephone number
b. Cost savings–all those added features like Caller ID are bundled in with VoIP
c. Ease of installation

Those benefits are built in and a part of any good VoIP plan as everyone in the industry knows that in order for VoIP to succeed it needs to be consumer friendly.

While my guess is one of the referenced companies (SIPphone, Vonage, Packet8) must have had their PR team score the story, it does point out that in rural America the gatekeepers of the media are catching on to the VoIP movement.
