VoIP And WiFi In NYC?

Nancy Gohring at WiFi Net News has a nice post and links to a story that seems to be building in New York to use WiFi and VoIP together.

The whole idea of WiFi phoning is something that I feel will be totally disruptive to the cellular industry, which is why T-Mobile is involved so early. They see that and want to be sure they don’t get circumvented.

While their moves can be seen as defensive, they are actually looking at a way to be a bigger player for those that always want to be connected. The issue though becomes QoS. Right now the WiFi phones have no way to authenticate easily, and softphone quality based on a trial yesterday seems less than business grade.

For this to work well, it needs to be business grade telephony, not hobbyist grade.
