The Standard, a media outlet in China, reports that Asian telecom powerhouse PCCW wants to have its dominant status of landline provider revoked so it can enter the VoIP market.
If I ever saw an endorsement by a major player in circuit switched voice this is it.
In Hong Kong alone, PCCW is seeing business go elsewhere, and for the most part they have had to sit back while the competition has taken the VoIP ball and run with it.
City Telecom in Hong Kong already has over 400,000 “triple play subscribers” and some 210,000 VoIP users, many of whom do not know they are using VoIP. Their rates for international termination are amongst some of the lowest in the world and they have built their own global network.
While a lot of the VoIP world is watching the USA market, China represents a bountiful opportunity for the fibered enabled.
