AOL is not sitting back and being idle in their efforts. With AIM as a front end to VoIP you get lots of power to play with. Presence (remember, AOL’s AIM already routes IM messages to and from cell phones) and ease of use.
If anything, they are a huge threat to SKYPE too. AOL already has over 20 million users. AOL also will not roll out a service that is not QoS based. That’s why they are doing some of the work internally, and only using Level3 for their network, not their capabilities.
