This Thursday AOL officially launches their VoIP product. While I’m embargo from saying more than what already has been written I can say that other than having to install AOL on a naked PC that never had the software on it before which took some time, the service worked very well.
Call quality was on par with CallVantage and better than Vonage or Packet 8. I mention that because like Packet 8, they share the Level3 network. The difference is that AOL has chosen to work with Sonus and other best of breed infrastructure providers to make a network that delivers the goods.
The beauty of the service is in its simplicity. While I won’t go into details today, I will tomorrow.
If AOL was setting out to apply to VOIP their same simple is as simple does approach to online communications they have achieved it and more. While nothing in the service is breakthrough, their are some features that are highly enticing.
If you’re an AOL customer on broadband and have been thinking about switching to VoIP, this may be just the ticket for you.
