MCI Coming Out Of The Closet With VoIP

Today Reuters broke the story about MCI’s plans for consumer VoIP in the USA. Sort of.

Over a week ago when I first commented on MCI’s launch, their PR team was rather tight lipped and seem to be remaining so.

Basically this is a trial, or in real consumer marketing speak, a “test” program to see if a) it works, b) how they can market it, c) to what customer segments d) in what manner e) at what price.

Considering that MCI is about to be a part of Verizon this almost seems like some product manager pushed to get the project out in order to prove themselves. While staying on the annual business plan is a good idea usually, given only a few months will pass before MCI is under the Verizon Wing, I think customers should be wary before jumping into a trial that doesn’t have a long term guarantee for them.

Also, to the readers who suspected DeltaThree was a part of this, according to the MCI representative I spoke with they are NOT one of the partners in the deal, despite being Verizon’s partner in VoIP.
