Michael Robertson is the ultimate disruptor. First he brought out MP3.com, then Lindows. Each caused controversy. Now he’s rolling out Gizmo, a softphone based telephone service with realistic pricing, In and Out features, interoperability to SIP networks and using the SIP standard.
While the service, client and web site are all just in BETA, and this is an extension of his SIPphone business efforts, my first few experiences have been rather positive with the call quality besting Skype as the echo and packet loss was almost non existent with someone I just Skyped with.
Already Robertson’s team has released a PC and Mac client, with more on the way, including Linux. I just hope a Pocket PC client is in the offing down the road.
