Getting It Almost Right

Hat tip to Russell Shaw on his attempt at analysis of the Keynote VoIP Study, that was reported on widely this past Monday.

Shaw has analyzed the analysis and come up with some conclusions, but as I discussed with the Keynote team last week, there remains two huge and fatal holes to the study.

On the carrier side using T-3’s in the quality and evaluation mix flaws the data because most of the TA’s are tuned and optimized to work with DSL and Cable Modems, so bigger isn’t better. The second and more important aspect of the study is the fact that all cable and DSL providers aren’t equal, even in the same community, let alone nationwide.

So while Time Warner Cable got the nod as being the best high speed connection, that’s really only relevant if you live in the footprint of the communities where the test machines for Keynote were and meaningless if you live elsewhere, or even more meaningless if you are part of a smaller ISP with only a regional footprint.
