Telepresence On The Rise

Wired reports that high end, room filling Telepresence is rapidly gaining momentum, fueled largely by the likes of Cisco, HP, Polycom and Tandberg.

But are they interoperable?

If anything is holding back mass adoption of video conferencing its the lack of interoperability. For example. I like to use SightSpeed. Pal Ken Rutkowski likes to use Skype video, while another friend prefers Yahoo Messenger. None of those applications can talk to one another let alone the new high end and very expensive systems referenced in Wired.

Now what would be great is if I could take my SightSpeed client and use it with Cisco’s Telepresence and not need 10 megs of symmetrical bandwidth that the Cisco platform requires. That way, anywhere anyone is, they would have the ability to take part in the video call with the mother-ship without the expensive cost associated with the current platforms.
