Did 8×8 Put Vonage, Skype and Others Behind the 8 Ball?

The patent announcement today by Packet8’s parent 8×8 regarding distributed gateways and VoIP on the surface reads to me like companies dumping calls into the PSTN from the IP world may be in for some negotiations.
