Prophet Center, a blog about media and technology, caught my eye with this post about online video putting pressure on “Hollywood.”
I think it will. The reason is the TMZ, or what it means. Thirty Mile Zone. That’s the territory that the unions which pretty much have a lot of the power in Hollywood from the labor side of the fence reside in. Once you leave the TMZ prices drop for all kinds of resources (it is one of the reasons shows got produced in San Diego and Orange County.)
The other reason is the rapid advancement of the production tools available to anyone with a well powered PC. Editing that used to be done on an AVID can now be done on the Mac and as more cloud based technology comes to market, this will only proliferate to more places, especially with the Broadband Stimulus package, some WiMax and even Satellite Broadband access becoming more plentiful.
Now some producer in Iowa can have everything at their fingertips ranging from talent, to producers, writers and even distribution, all without leaving their cornfield, given every real creative the opportunity to have their own “Field of Dreams.”
