I’ve long been a fan of the wines of New Zealand, especially from the Marlborough region, and one of my favorite producers has been Huia. Best known for a Sancerre like Sauvignon Blanc, the winery also makes some sensational Pinots. Both Noir and Gris.
The 2007 Huia Pinot Gris is a melon drop and citrus fruit bomb. While it shows all the minerals one expects in an Alsatian Pinot Gris, this wine shows that despite being a New World, Southern Hemisphere white, that the grape knows know difference. Layer upon layer of honeydew and cantaloup fruit, plus a hint of lime, lemon and of course, Kiwi fruit, this is a delightful summer poolside white that just always hits the spot.
