David Corey is in love with the Mourvedre grape as much as any winemaker in the USA since Randall Graham made his famed “Old Telegram” back in the mid 80s. Since his debut with the 2002 vintage, David has been steadily making strides as one of the west coast’s finest young winemakers with his brand, Core Wine.
His 2003 Red is a delicious blend of Syrah, Mourvedre and Grenache, reminding me of some of the nice Bandol reds from Bastide Blanch, Château Vannières and Domaine Nobelese. These are not wines for the timid, especially when young, and neither is Master Corey’s wine. Now seven years young this lively and lovely wine is much like a Sablet from the Rhone Valley, reminding me of the 1998 Chateau de Trignon Rasteau in quality and texture.
