Open or Opening Up

There’s a big difference between Open and Opening Up and letting some thing on the network.

That’s pretty much how I see all the posturing by the likes of Verizon Wireless and AT&T. Om reports that not much is really new, despite the announcements this past week by AT&T (note I referred to much of this in the VZW story earlier so a YAWN Award goes AT&T’s spin cycle and spin control group who are reached only by email.)

Over a year ago I penned the note about Open Net. If the next gen wireless network operators like Sprint’s XOM, Clearwire and aspiring Google want to be big champions the concept of Open Net would be very much at home there. Immediately many fledgling developers of hardware and software would find an open and free place to call home. Like Netscape and Microsoft, FaceBook and Google, Yahoo, eBay and Skype, new worlds would open, new ideas would surface and the next big thing would emerge.

With a closed or limited open environment, not much NEW would really come along that fast.
