So far here are some observations from an always on type of knowledge worker:
1) I have seen my email level increase. People who used to IM to me over Skype are using email to reach me instead.
Result- more time lag, more delays.
2) I am using my cell phone more. Peoiple who used to Skype me now are calling my phone number.
Result more dropped calls. More unscheduled interruptions.
3) I didn’t know who celebrated a birthday today
Result-the florists are losing money.
4) I now have people who are using IM clients spread out on more different programs. Result, I’m going from window to window.
5) My team is not affected. We have been using Gizmo and SightSpeed for over a year as our way to communicate. Skype is used mostly by clients and media folks.
6) I’m seeing people on GizmoProject now who are rarely on.
My closing observation: Behavior is changing. We are surviving. Things just take longer….
