A payphone that is WiFi based? That’s the idea coming out of Australia.
Basically this means payphone operators can set up anywhere there is a WiFi cloud.
How this plays out in the muni-wifi space is anyone’s guess, as the concept of access points being like a cellular network’s tower equipment to be able to handle simultaneous calls has yet to be tested to it’s fullest yet by the new carriers out there. Validation that the new WiFi networks can carry dozens of calls per access point will be one of the acid tests that prove the worth of the new networks.
