Vonage in the UK goes mobile VoIP with calls now being made in London’s Financial District called the City.
This is an area I am keenly interested in, and I fully expect Telecom WinePal Steve Howe and his Earthlink team to nail down how to do this here in the USA in the SF and Anaheim WiFi buildouts they have made. A lot of the call quality issues fall on the heads at Tropos, the mesh network technology company.
The key is packet loss and managing the hoping from access point to access point, insuring and maintaining the connection all the way through. I’m hearing that’s one of the issues Tropos is dealing with and attacking with fervor, as the voice play that takes MuniWireless “Beyond The Computer” makes it so, so attractive. But with voice, due to cell phones, comes mobility and the need to move around town remains a part of our everyday lives so the Tropos folks have to dig down and get their network architecture fine tuned to handle all that.
