Disaster Relief VoiceMail

TechDirt is pointing to Jeff Pulver about disaster relief voice mail networks being built out should another Katrina strike. What’s amazing to me, is as Jeff points out, that the telcos and the cable MSOs are opposed to the idea of making sure no phone goes unanswered by giving victims a free virtual voicemail number.

To me, the Universal Services Fund is an ideal way to make this happen, and not give the carriers a voice in this matter. It’s not a if, but a when for the need for this and Pulver and Evlin are clearly on the proper path with this idea.
