Om Malik on Broadband » VoWifi Phones Are the Shizzle has Om throwing the smack down on VoWiFi. What he’s missing is it’s not an additional phone, but an extension of the number you already have that may end up working where cell service isn’t.
Recently I was in the Santa Ynez Valley where you can’t even say “can you hear me now” on Verizon or Sprint or AT&T or T-Mobile. There is just not any cell service. But at the neighboring winery to my good friend Doug Margerum’s cellars, they had a T-1 installed and connected the winery via WiFi. With my laptop and a softphone I was still able to make calls.
Just like I look at Skype and FWD:Pulver Communicator as Internet Intercoms with the ability to dial out (and in the PC’s case, receive calls) I look at a softphone that lets you do VoWiFI as an extension to my VoIP service, not another line.
While I never went as far as Om did in math years past the second grade, I do know the value of convenience and all about being connected. Then again, Om, coming from Philly, like I did, being connected was a normal way of life for many of us.
