One factor that has to be considered, remains the digital divide in the USA. Until broadband has the kind of penetration and uptake that regular phone connections have, the ability to switch is reduced.
As VoIP loyalists sometimes we have to stop being so religious about our passions, and take a step back and look at the overall landscape. Prices of broadband are increasing, with higher speeds. Now tack on VoIP, subtract your old telco local and long distance plan, and even with all that people still have sticker shock.
Can you see the ads coming soon. “Phone Calling On Sale”, that’s what it needs, but I don’t see that happening too soon. If anything the costs of all the aspects of telephony, due to consolidation, will be going up. That’s why companies like Skype, PhoneGaim and Popular Telephony all have business models to really foster competition and a new way of doing things.
