Skype’s IPO Tender Was Really a Route to Another Sale

Wired, Reuters and others are reporting that Skype is in talks at preliminary stages for various types of tie ups with FaceBook and Google. No surprise. In the past Google took a good hard look at Skype and bought Gizmo instead, but that doesn't keep the corporate development teams from kicking the tires.

Ever since Skype filed their S-1 there have been talks of some company making an acquisition including Verizon, something a verified with some inside sources at Verizon, but Skype passed as the price offered was too low.

All this means that Skype is keeping their options open. Given how long ago they filed the S-1 and how in the interim other companies like Boingo have since filed and now gone public, some to tepid reactions, and with the S-1 off the table, for now, it looks more likely that either investment from an outside company or an outright sales is in the offing.
