Is Cable Ready For VoIP

The Street.com’s Scott Moritz writes up a summary story on how the cable industry is approaching VoIP.

While much of what is included in the story has been reported here and elsewhere, Moritz does a good job at bringing a good deal of facts together on where the MSOs (Multiple System Operators) are heading and who they are dancing with (i.e. Sprint, MCI, Level3).

One point he makes is the short term life possibilities of Vonage, citing a research analyst from ABI.

Companies like VoIP specialist Vonage “are living on borrowed time,” says ABI Research analyst Vamsi Sistla.

That type of comment can spell trouble for the New Jersey VoIP pioneer, but is likely based on the fact that despite rapid growth, Vonage does not own their network because they don’t have one. It’s the public Internet that they use, unlike AT&T’s CallVantage. Yes, there is a difference, but in the near term Vonage is a significant force in the growing VoIP playing field, and will continue to be.

  1. Re: Comcast, just a note. I have a verizon DSL line for backup. We use Comcast for primary. Earlier in the month I moved my callvantage from the comcast line to the verizon “doing nothing” dsl. Calls get lost all the time. Never had any problems with it on cable. DSL sucks!!!!!!
