Fast Fiber to the Home is coming. One by one the announcements are coming out from SBC and Verizon and if you’re a cable company executive you had better start looking over your shoulders.
While the cable companies have had a good laugh about the problems with DSL, if FTTH takes hold the whole world for delivery of services will shift. But, there is a hurdle.
If the Telcos don’t learn how the content world works, how advertising is sold (most of them have sold off their Yellow Pages business) they won’t have a business. Just delivering pipe that is fast is only part of the story. Getting content is the big hurdle they will have, which is why cable MSO’s are investing in studios (Comcast into MGM is the most recent).
I really think Verizon will be well served to invest in the New York Met’s broadcast rights today, even if they don’t have the pipe to deliver it yet. While I’m not a Mets fan, I do see the value and recognize the log jam it will break and attention that it will generate which will do more to drive demand and awareness than anything else around.
