My guess is Skype starts to co-exist more with the traditional telcos, rather than simply be a disruptive threat. Imagine a private labeled Skype product that cell companies “resell” that gives you all the features of your cell phone, but on the desktop and laptop.
If any group are in position to take advantage of the convergence of data and voice, it’s the cellular carriers. They already own customers, have towers, network access. Once cellular goes VoIP, and handset become dual mode, then SIP based solutions are going to be a bigger part of the equation.
Oh, Skype doesn’t do SIP you say…well stay tuned. I think that as SIP continues to grow Skype will find a way to incorporate it.
