Level3 didn’t really do much at VON. Sure they offered briefings, but the most striking impression they left me with was the two clowns they had outside the main exhibition hall, one of whom was doing a very bad impression of Max Headroom.
And I can judge that, you see, the original Max was played by a friend, actor Matt Frewer who used to join me on trips to play for the Celebrity All Star Hockey Team. Every once and a while Matt would let Max come out and play, cracking up everyone with his sardonic wit. Sadly, the joker Level3 hired tried, but to the trained eye I thought it was just a joke about them trying to say they’re the inside brains.
Right now Level3 needs to get their message out the right way. While I wish I had time to take their briefing request, they don’t need to be joking around at a time when their stock is in the tank and their business is falling off. While they have the potential to right themselves, and the AOL deal is a step in the right direction, I don’t know how much real cash that will generate.
If they were hoping to conjure up other visions based on the comedy troop, they didn’t. And don’t forget, Max Headroom was cancelled by the network.
