Jeff and Russell seem to be disagreeing on what VON isn’t, that being a show for consumer VoIP.
I for one would love to see a real consumer oriented segement of VON, not part of CES where IP Telephony gets lost with all the big televisions and even bigger booths from the major players like Microsoft, Sony, Pioneer and others.
VOIP is mainstream and there is a lot that the consumer market needs to know. The consumer press needs better education and information flow to see how large the market really is. SKYPE could be a huge player at a show like this. So too would companies like UNIDEN, VONAGE and even CableLabs.
I agree about a consumer track but it’s too early for that. Explain what criteria you use when you say VOIP is mainstream? Why does the consumer care how large the market is? They care about applications. Not everyone gets overly excited about cheap phone calls, where are the social apps that drive usage? Nowhere to be found. Where are the voice-driven games? Nowhere. Where are the VC and the geeks, everywhere. Reminds me of Internet World 1995, if you were there you know what I mean.
