Auto Renewal Time

This is one of those posts that falls into the stupid is as stupid does category.

I was stupid. Somehow I figured if the parking tickets and speeding tickets find there way to me due to my 2006 purchased car being registered with the state of California that my auto renewal would too. Wrong.

It seems for the third or fourth year in a row the renewal statement was sent but never reached me so i had to pay a fine of some non-trivial amount, but I can appeal it, which I’m doing.

On the other hand all my domains that are important to me are on Auto Renewal. They bill my credit card and notify me by email. Given California is likely one, if not the most tech oriented state in the Union I have to wonder why:

1) The state doesn’t better promote their online auto renewal section for automobile registration, like when I received my plates!

2) Create a mechanism for auto renewal and fee collection.

3) Notify registrants by email of pending expiration or upcoming renewal. As much as I hate the weekly notifications by Dotster and GoDaddy, I do read them and make sure all is in order.

This may seem trivial but those of us who hate paper, would really like it.
