In Pennsylvania VoIP Operators To Pay A 911 Fee

The Governor of Pennsylvania, Ed Rendell has signed into law a bill that has amended the Public Safety Emergency Telephone Act to now require VoIP (voice over internet protocol) telephone service providers charge a $1 fee on each service line. The money will be placed in a fund in the state treasury and disbursed to counties to fund 911 call centers.

This means the Cable and VoIP providers now have to pay the fee. The issue will impact the virtual folks who may have a Pennsylvania address but are using their VoIP box elsewhere. That amount is likely so small its a rounding error, but for the cable folks you can bet this is a chunk of change that will passed on to the end user.
