Today Alec Saunders called me from Denmark. He was on a 3 SkypePhone loaned to him by Jim Courtney. He got me via Skype, sort of. I was not online when he called but Skype Out is set to forward to my French cell phone. Since calling party pays some of my Skype Out minutes got used. Big deal the rates are minimal enough. It just as easily could have forwarded to my USA Truphone number and would have rang on the same handset, or I could have had the call redirected to my T-Mobile @ Home mobile which I’ve also been using.
Bottom line is the cost of my international calls is next to nothing because I’ve planned ahead.
Take this scenario. With Boingo Mobile I can pay less than eight dollars a month and log onto the Boingo hotspots all over the globe. With Truphone on the same phone once I hit the Boingo powered hotspot I’m connected. Since I can SMS via Truphone I can send a text and say to someone CALL ME NOW and be called back.
No global roaming charges at all in any of the above scenarios.
The key is to have the right handsets and the right services. For the person who makes one or two calls the entire time they’re away from home none of this matters, but if you’re like me, someone who is in Europe about every six to eight weeks, for two weeks or more at a time, knowing what works, how it works and how to save money is key, because I’d rather pay for a great cup of coffee, a very delicious dinner or a wonderful glass of wine than waste it on International costs of telephony.
It is an interesting article. Skype phone is the cheap way to call. We can easily make calls through it.
