I love steak and always have. Back in San Diego it’s usually Flemings or Cowboy Star for me and my mates. In London, without question its Hawksmoor. When I’m in Paris it has always been Maison L’Aubrac, and will still be, as the venerable institution on Rue Marbeuf still dominates and wins with their stunning Red Wines by the glass. I even went their last night and had a lovely Villard 2007 St. Joseph that was only bested by another 2007, this time the Balthezar Cornas which was about as good as any young Cornas ever tasted, but then again, in 2007 you pretty much only had to pick the grapes as the wines in the Rhone from North to South were just about perfect.
But a new player has entered the beef scene in Paris, just down the block. Named Charbon Rouge, the two story, modern and very minimalist design is home to some of the most tender Argentine beef I have ever come across. What’s more the wine list is well chosen, and the 2007 Leccia Patrimonio from the isle of Corsica, could not be beat.
Charbon Rouge is new, and it’s a gem.
