Ken Camp and James Enck have the jump in the blogosphere on BridgePort Networks landing a huge deal with Siemens for the NomadicOne solution that is being put into Siemens IMS offerings. That means GSM and CDMA carriers and the cable guys will all be able to play nice in moving calls between networks in a seamless manner.
Dean Bubley of Disruptive Wireless, someone you must add if you care about convergence, also goes really deep on the deal and what its implications are and he provides a deep overview of who else wants to be in the same space, but isn’t quite yet.
The deal means BridgePort Networks will be integrated by Siemens into their IMS/FMC portfolio for both packet and circuit switched telephony networks, making this the first deal of its type that I know of with a Network Equipment Provider (NEP) that enables cable and mobile operators to seamlessly handover telephone calls between networks.
The relationship comes right on the heels of a Siemens and Time Warner announcement where the two admitted to a successful trial of seamless handover so all one has to do is connect the dots from here to see where things are going for the three companies.
For those wondering what this all means, especially in trying to understand IMS, let me point you to Ken Camp’s additional post where he interviewed one of my Chicago wine drinking pals, Sanjay Jhawar of BridgePort, who remains one of the brightest people I know on the planet in the FMC world.
Jon Arnold, who celebrates his 16th anniversary tonight, has a killer post too that just rolled in….
