My sources tell me that the AT&T/Bell South deal was more about the long term prospects of business sectors mobile and IMS than land line and basic telephony services. That concept is being supported by a story in New Telephony Magazine today.
The other side of the coin is the business sector. AT&T now can go cross country without partners to carry data for the most part. Even before they had partners in other carriers to help fill in the gaps, but as the landscape becomes more defined this will also open up the doors for companies like Covad who are also building up a lot of next generation services, like WiMax.
If a company like Covad wanted to be different they would embrace the idea of Net Neutrality and provide a real open and free Internet, not be moving towards the IMS walled garden that AT&T will likely be migrating to.
