Skype is joining up with Motorola. What I find so interesting is not that this is happening, but that Motorola by announcing this clearly is saying to the carriers, we’re not your puppets, we’re not your slaves.
So many companies in the handset world have kow-towed to the carriers. My Audiovox 6600 Windows Mobile originally was to have both WiFi and a Camera, but just as Siemens bowed to Cingular pressure to not have the camera in the handset, Audiovox took the heat from Verizon and produced a stripped down version of the XTC Harrier simply because VerizonWireless wants the EVDO platform to flourish.
By working with Skype, and other new gen platforms, manufacturers like Motorola are not only showing courage, but smarts and vision.
I applaud those companies and salute their leaders. James Enck has a similar viewpoint…
