Vonage Video Phone

I’ve been busy the last two days attending the Bridgeport Networks Global Convergence Conference which was all about Mobile meeting up with VoIP. The conference was excellent and I got to moderate a panel which featured the father of Ethernet, Bob Metcalfe who now is a VC with Polaris Ventures as well as with Dave Hagen, President of Boingo and Brent Cobb, the GM of Earthlink’s Mobile Phone efforts. Along with former CTIA Executive Director Tom Wheeler, the group talked about the future and what it will take for convegence to really occur. I’ll likely have more thoughts that I’ll weave through the blog, but for now it’s back to blogging…..

Vonage is starting the push of their VideoPhone service and many of the male pattern gearness sites like Gizmodo and others are starting their enticement that Vonage hopes will lead to heavy breathing….I’m actually liking using Sightspeed or Yahoo Messenger for Video chats with my girlfriend when I’m on the road and she’s back at home so I’m starting to see the value of video with voice in a new light. That said, I really think the future is more of using software from companies like XTEN, whose eyeBeam product is a softphone for video. Then again, I’m all over the idea of softphones, but that’s for another post.
