The Seat Nobody Could Ever Sell You

For a century, live sports offered you two choices. Be there, limited by geography, capacity, and price. Or watch it on a screen, with unlimited reach but never actually in it. Broadcast solved scale. It never solved presence. Nobody has closed that gap. Until, maybe, now.

This week, a company called L1VE launched something it calls Social Presence: a ticketed experience that puts fans inside a live match or concert, together, in real time, from wherever they happen to be. Not a broadcast. Not a stream. Not a lone person in a headset. A shared room that happens to be virtual. Its first event: Real Madrid vs. Fiorentina, August 1, available nowhere else. Personal Note: I remember when the late Ed Snider said this type of fan experience would come one day when PRISM was launched.

Whether L1VE becomes the next category-defining platform or a very well-funded experiment, the instinct behind it is correct. Sports has spent thirty years optimizing distribution: more feeds, more platforms, more ways to half-watch a game on a second screen. What it hasn’t done is give people back the thing that made the stadium worth the price in the first place: being somewhere with other people who care as much as you do.

That’s the real opportunity in sports right now. Not more content. More communion. AI is about to make content infinite: every highlight, every take, every synthetic recap, generated on demand, for free, forever. Which means the one thing left worth paying for is the opposite of infinite, a moment that happens once, that you shared, that can’t be regenerated.

Rights holders should be paying close attention. Not because this particular company will win (markets rarely reward the first mover; they reward the one who scales fastest with the fewest excuses), but because the model is right. Presence is the product. Everything else was just the delivery mechanism.

Get ready. The next great sports business won’t be selling you a better screen. It’ll be selling you a better room.
