Need For Speed

The MIT Technology Review has a very cogent argument for VoIP users need for more upload speed.

Currently, most broadband users have between 128k and 384k of uploadable bandwidth per second, and given the all the new technology that is now used in the broadband connected homes, it’s not enough.

For example, I have VOIP, which takes up about 90k. I also run video conferencing, but don’t take part in online gaming. While I have all the download I need, its the upload speeds that hurt.

I’m beginning to think seriously about full blown DSL that may be available in my area as all this talk is making me hungry for more speed.

  1. I stumbled upon your site a week or so ago and havve found it very interesting, I am an investment banker and am looking at the disruptive nature that VOIP will bring to my sector, Telecom. I am suprised by your recent post about DSL? I would assume that you had cable in San Diego that is sure to be faster than DSL, not being a geek I found first hand on my last move that cable blows dsl out of the water at least in my region, Verizon,Comcast. Keep it up.

  2. JOHN,
You’re correct on the download part, not on the upload…which is what I want for all the VoIP and video conferecning I’m doing these days.
