My friend and fellow blog star Om Malik and I usually agree on most points, or at the very least have similar viewpoints on things, so while I fully agree in concept with what he wrote today about the issues surrounding VoIP, I think he’s being premature in saying we’re ending the honeymoon phase of VoIP’s lifecycle as a headline, but the body copy of the post is right in the moneymaker. But when it comes to VoIP Andy say’s “we’re all still dating,” either that or practicing polygamy.
The current VoIP offerings from the service providers are in some ways like perfume or a short skirt in the office back in the 70s. They are enticing, alluring and get the attention of those who have already been around the block, or those wanting to go for the slow ride, in the fast lane.
In my mind VoIP has ended the long standing marriage with the phone company, and is the leading cause of divorce from the regional Bell carriers we all grew up with. For many, we’re entering our second childhood, and with VoIP we are now in the new suit, smoking the expensive cigar and buffing and toning up our look to catch the new hottie.
In a nutshell, it means there will be lots of carrier switching, long before any of us marry one carrier again…there are just simply too many options out there and playing the field after all those years looks mighty fine.
I agree with OM that Vonage is giving ALL in VOIP a black eye with their CRAPPY service and continued outages………..
1. Why does Packet8 work 100% of the time??????????
2. WHY are all my P8 calls on the Level3 network crystal clear???????
some things in VOIP are different, WHOSE network you ride for Quality of Servive SHOULD and will win out in the long run………Level3 will DOMINATE this field before 2005 is OVER………can YOU spell “”””I B M””?????????
