Mylo Gets No Respect

I’ve now had my Sony Mylo for about three weeks. I’ve used it for Skype and the audio remains the best I’ve found. As for the rest of the features, I don’t know (or see) enough people on GoogleTalk that I know who I don’t find on my BlackBerry’s Messenger, SightSpeed, AOL’s AIM, or Yahoo Messenger so until someone brings out a killer GoogleTalk app or device I guess I’m not going to find many people there I won’t find elsewhere.

I like the fact that it has Yahoo Messenger, but until Y! Messenger supports multiple log-ins like other people with multiple devices who like to YAHOO, I’m hosed. I mean, I’d love to have the Mylo in one hand and the new Linksys Y! Messenger phone in the other and be able to make calls and chat just like I can on Skype..oh, right. Skype does support multiple log ins…Once again this tells me Yahoo’s hardware strategy and software strategy remains out of sync My guess is that Jeff Bonforte and company already have Multiple log ins already on the drawing board.

So today when I saw the Business Week review on the Mylo I had to ask myself, do I agree, or dissent. After reflection on it, I tend to more agree. The novelty of the Mylo has worn off. It’s a nice package, with great audio. But at the end of the day, it’s a closed device and doesn’t really come close to the Nokia 770 as an Internet appliance. But it does do Skype SOUND better than on any other device, including Macs and PCs, so chalk one up for Sony there, and if you want a portable device that makes Skype calls, and lets you do some other neat things, it does the trick, but just don’t expect more.

  1. I must be the only happy mylo owner. I prefer not to carry around a big phone (e.g., blackberry, treo, etc) so I didn’t have a mobile Internet device until I got the mylo.
Because it is small I carry it with me (pocket or laptop bag) and in just seconds can grab it, power it on and go online to check e-mail, view news sites, etc. mylo’s Opera browser is suprisingly useful, even at mylo’s 320×240 display resolution. (My trick: Set zoom to 90%, text size to small)
The reason I bought the mylo was to use the Skype functionality. However, because to hear and be heard you need to use the microphone and headphones I don’t carry those around and as a result have made Skype calls just twice.
I would probably use it more if I had Wi-Fi access on the train and at retail locations.
